New Stragetic Alliance with Xinweir Glass Works, Tianjin, China

Monday, May 25, 2000     Buena, NJ

Today, SP Industries, a New Jersey-based corporation, announced a new strategic alliance with Xinweir Glass Works, Tianjin, China. Moreover, SP Industries is actively engaged in acquisition discussions with Xinweir. This new strategic alliance extends the market reach of SP Industries Glass Group into China and the Pacific Rim nations, while broadening the group's overall capabilities, efficiencies and product lines. According to John W. Partridge, president and CEO of SP Industries, this new bi-continental partnership represents the inception of a "global growth strategy, developed several years ago, and now in the process of implementation."

The SP Industries scientific glass products group, composed of Wilmad, LabGlass, LabGlass-Tennessee and Reliance Glass, is a major contingent of the corporate family, which had revenues in excess of $60 million in 1999. Partridge, speaking of the new partnership, said: "Our focus has been on national growth and expansion; for example, Reliance Glass, located in Chicago, was a recent acquisition. We view China and the Pacific Rim nations as a large, expanding market for high-quality laboratory glassware not readily found locally. Our alliance with Xinweir Glass provides a unique opportunity for us to meet this need."

According to the company, Dr. Kaiming Liu, along with other family members, founded Xinweir Glass in 1995. Dr. Liu is a chemist who received his Ph. D from the University of Illinois. His primary mission in forming the company was to create a quality scientific glassware manufacturing operation with standards of craftsmanship that met or exceeded levels found anywhere in the world. To accomplish this objective, he recruited the most experienced glassblowers from the large state-owned companies and teamed them with trained quality technicians.

In describing the role Xinweir Glass will play within the larger scope of SP Industries operations, Partridge explained: "First, we expect to form SP Industries in China and then move the assets of Xinweir Glass into it. Second, we plan to continue sales of the existing product line to the academic market through Kemtech America, its US affiliate. Third, we plan to expand the sales and marketing activities of Xinweir Glass throughout Asia, using our existing agents in that area. Fourth, we will include selected products from our China factory within our Lab Glass product line, utilizing either Pyrextm or Schotttm tubing in the manufacturing process. Finally, we intend to utilize SP Industries-China as the headquarters of our corporate Pacific Rim operations." When asked how this would affect employment at current US glass facilities, Partridge responded: "We have been fortunate that our strategic alliance with Corning, and their strong relationships with VWR and Fisher, have resulted in a much greater growth potential for our companies. In addition, our venture with Xinweir Glass will open up new markets both here and abroad. As a result, we foresee a gradual increase in our current levels of domestic production and employment through this venture."

SP Industries, Inc. was created in December, 1996 by a management-led buyout of three long established companies that are recognized leaders in their markets. SP Industries has become a major player in the laboratory, scientific and industrial marketplace. SP Industries' operating companies are: Wilmad-LabGlass, VirTis, Hotpack, and Hull.
