Sp Industries Restructures To Increase Responsiveness And Streamline Operations
May 17, 2004 Warminster, PA
SP Industries, a leading manufacturer of specialty glassware, environmental control chambers, glassware washers and dryers, and laboratory to production scale lyophilizers, is restructuring to increase responsiveness to customers. For the last eighteen months, SP Industries has been undergoing significant changes that will improve efficiencies in several areas. The company, which sells its products under the following well-known brands: Wilmad-LabGlass, HotPack/Heinicke, Virtis, and Hull, has been restructured along two distinct business lines and two product groups. The product groups are equipment and glass. The business lines are laboratory and industrial. With these changes, SP Industries is now offering a fully integrated package of products and services.
In order to increase responsiveness to customer needs and streamline operations for maximum efficiency, SP Industries has been making very significant investments in facilities, infrastructure, training, and people. With a new management team in place, the company has clearly defined the vision for the future. After a thorough forward-looking analysis of traditional markets, SP Industries is refocusing to core competencies and developing exciting new products and services geared to meeting the demands of those markets.
The company's four glass operations have been combined into one business unit located in New Jersey. The equipment line is now operated from two facilities, one in Warminster, Pennsylvania and one in Gardiner, New York. Corporate headquarters and manufacturing operations were relocated to the new 75,000 square foot facility in Warminster. A number of capital improvements have been made to update processes and expand capabilities. To improve equipment operations, sales, marketing, and engineering, manufacturing operations for HotPack were moved from Philadelphia into existing ISO 9001:2000 registered facilities in Gardiner, NY and Warminster, PA.
In addition, the company continues to invest heavily in validation and commissioning competencies. With the ongoing requirements of 21 CRF Part 11 and the emergence of GAMP 4, SP Industries is uniquely positioned as the leader in compliance and GAMP 4 commitment. The company expects to be fully compliant with GAMP 4 by the end of the year.
In an effort to provide the best possible customer service, the approach to communication has been adjusted considerably. Customers have direct lines to management staff for their use regarding all issues. Realizing that an important factor in growth comes from listening, the field sales force is empowered to resolve most issues at the point of identification rather than following the old chain of command concepts, which can lead to excessive delays. Marketing efforts are being combined to more effectively promote all of the SP Industries' brands and products.
SP TechCare, the service arm of SP Industries, has also been restructured to be more responsive to customers. Staffed to provide after-the-sale support for all SP products, SP TechCare can respond quickly to equipment service needs. Experienced personnel offer technical assistance to help customers meet new guidelines, save time, increase productivity, simplify tasks, or reduce costs.
